However, as we cede more decision-making power to automated systems, a critical question emerges: who is accountable when these algorithms err, discriminate, or otherwise fail the public they are meant to serve? The concept of algorithmic accountability in government is no longer a theoretical debate; it is a pressing necessity.

Algorithms, at their core, are sets of rules or instructions designed to perform a specific task. In government, these tasks can have profound impacts on individuals’ lives. For instance, an algorithm used to predict recidivism might influence judicial sentencing, while another might determine which individuals receive priority for public housing. The allure of objective, data-driven decision-making is strong. Proponents argue that algorithms can remove human bias, leading to fairer outcomes than those produced by fallible human officials. Governments need to move away from proprietary black-box systems towards algorithms that can be audited and understood.
